The holidays are coming fast. It is hard to believe that it is only about 40
days until Christmas and less than two weeks until the Thanksgiving holiday in
the US.

Coming even quicker is the fact that it is only a week away from the
launch of the new XBox 360. That is the item that tops my Christmas list for
this year. It will be interesting to watch the sales to see if they hit the
projected 3 million units in the first 90 days. It will also be interesting to
see how quickly the hacks arrive to turn this console into a full fledged
computer at a very cheap price. I’d be willing to bet that the hacks happen
quicker than the 3 million unit milestone!

On a more serious note, we were recently discussing what topics were most
important today to developers. I’d be interested in hearing what topics you
consider the most important. This can include topics like SOA and AJAX or
it can be lower-level topics such as double-bunking and bug caps. Drop me an
email if you have an opinion on what topics are important today for developers.
I’d be interested in your opinion.

Finally, I thought one tidbit of news from the past week was worth
mentioning. Sun announced that their Java Studio Enterprise 8.0 product
would be reduced in price. Version 7 retailed for around $1895. The new version
will be free – yes, free. I think I can safely speculate that the profit
margin on the new version will not be very good. I could also speculate on why
such a move is being made (Eclipse), but that would be unfounded (Eclipse).
Regardless, it would be great to seem similar price reductions on other IDEs!

That, however, is unlikely at this time.

Until next week!
