This week Microsoft announced the release of Silverlight 5, which is now available for download from the Silverlight website. Silverlight 5 is unique in that it may be the last major update for the software, which is used by .NET developers to create rich, interactive standalone and browser-based apps.

With support for PivotViewer and RichTextblock controls, improved text clarity and a Postscript Vector printing API, Silverlight 5 also ships with support for 3D graphics, 64-bit apps and WS-Trust for browsers. One telling sign from Microsoft is that they will support this release until Oct. 12, 2021, and it seems likely that this will be the last major update that will be released.
