Microsoft this week announced that they are partnering with Joyent for the creation of a Windows version of Node.js, which will become available as a standalone executable to be run as node.exe. There has been no mention of dependencies on shell scripts, or installation procedures at this time.
The blog on the NodeJS website discussed the partnership, which will allow Node to run on archaic systems including Windows Server 2003–and more importantly, the Windows Azure platform. By making the JavaScript library available on the server side, Microsoft hopes to help their plans for the Azure cloud services platform.
