This week Microsoft announced that its Windows Server and Windows Azure software will now support Hadoop, and will make a contribution back to the Apache Software Foundation and the Hadoop project in return for their support. The Microsoft implementation of the Hadoop stack provides additional options for data storage and access.
Microsoft and a contributor to the Hadoop project, Hortonworks, are working to complete a CTP test build of the Hadoop-based service for Windows Azure, which should be ready by the end of 2011. A CRP of the Hadoop-based distribution for Windows Server will be ready in 2012. These stacks will be supported by Microsoft Excel, PowerPivot and PowerView.
