.NET developers have been getting 'insufficient memory' notifications when doing small cut or copy operations in Visual Studio 2010 RTM. Microsoft has released a patch for Microsoft Visual Studio 2010 intended to address insufficient memory messages developers are getting when doing small cut or copy operations.

"Attempting to cut or copy small to moderate amounts of text in Microsoft Visual Studio 2010 RTM (Release to Manufacturing) may incorrectly cause the following error: 'Insufficient available memory to meet the expected demands of an operation at this time, possibly due to virtual address space fragmentation. Please try again later,' " said Brittany Behrens, program manager for the Microsoft Visual Studio Editor team, in a blog post. "In some cases, Microsoft Visual Studio incorrectly calculates that not enough memory is available (even though there is memory available)," and displays the error message, said Scott Guthrie, corporate vice president in the Microsoft Developer Division, also in a blog post.

Behrens noted that both before and after hotfix installation, there are cases when Microsoft Visual Studio accurately reports that not enough memory is available for a given operation. "You may still see out of memory dialogs when attempting to make a very large cut or copy (50+ MB of data at once). However, the fix should ensure that Microsoft Visual Studio is legitimately unable to find enough memory to execute such a large operation before displaying this dialog. The frequency of such a dialog should be dramatically decreased after installing the hotfix," Behrens said.

Microsoft Visual Studio 2010 was released in April and features capabilities for SharePoint and Windows 7 application development as well as multi-monitor support. But performance issues had pushed back its release by several weeks. The patch is available for downlaod here

  • For the first time in decades, IT leaders now consider all-flash storage as a strategic IT asset.  IT has become a new operating model that enables self-service with high performance, density and resiliency. It also offers the self-service agility of the public cloud combined with the security, performance, and cost-effectiveness of a private cloud.  Download this MIT Technology Review paper to learn more about how all-flash storage is transforming the data center.

  • IT planners have far more options as to where to run their workloads than ever before. On-premises data centers, co-location facilities and managed services providers are now joined by hybrid multi-clouds – a combination of Software-, Infrastructure- and Platform-as-a-Service (SaaS, IaaS, and PaaS) execution venues. All have unique operational, performance and economic characteristics that need to be considered when deploying workloads. Submit the form to watch this webinar replay featuring 451 …
