Virus Detection - Anti Virus

I've been interested in the "behind the scenes" working of detecting virusses for a long long time. I'm planning to make an example program for this in VB.NET ( if need be, whatever technology ), and I'm planning to write an article about this as well.

If anyone can provide me with some info on how virus detection works ( however basic ), can you please help me out ¿
