Hey,
If people are interested in DirectX HLSL shader programming, but don't want to write a whole game engine, try downloading this game editor:
http://www.esperient.com/index.php?option=com_content&view=article&id=112&Itemid=196
It comes with a whole library of DirectX HLSL .fx shader files, including standard material shaders, post-processing shaders, volumetric shaders, etc. There's plenty of demos, samples, and technical whitepapers available too:
http://www.esperient.com/index.php?option=com_content&view=article&id=113&Itemid=200
If you get stuck and are having problems, there's a support forum available there where you can receive help from our community of users.
Cheers,
Ben
