Will open office give spellcheck to outlook express?

My nan has recently got her first computer, but she can't spell to save herself. When trying to turn on the spellcheck in outlook express, we discovered that it doesn't come with one. You need to buy Microsoft Office to get the spellcheck, which will then work with outlook express. I don't want to encourage her to go out and buy expensive software that she won't use, so I was wondering if anyone knows whether downloading open office will help this situation. Bit of an obscure question I know, but still.

Perhaps if there's someone here with open office and not MS office they could go into outlook express and tell me whether their spellcheck works or not?

My conjecture is it is impossible since Open Office is not MS's
