Hi,

I've just recently been re-building my windows machine and have found that the logoff option has disappeared from my Start menu. It was there at the beginning of the re-install, but at some point it disappeared. Unfortunately, I didn't spot when this happened, but it was very early on before I had re-installed any proper applications.

I think it may have something to do with the fact that the welcome screen and fast user switching options have been greyed out within the User Accounts dialog, as I think that one of these control whether the logoff option appears on the Start menu.

Can anyone tell me how I can re-enable the welcome screen and fast user switching options in the User Accounts dialog, please, so I can change their settings?

Go to Control Panel > User Accounts > Change the way users log on or off and check "Use Fast User Switching".

The logoff button on the start menu isn't tied in with the welcome screen. It is in the taskbar properties.

Right-click taskbar -> Properties -> Start Menu (tab) -> Customize -> Display Log Off

Hi,

Here's the solution:

Download the following file, unzip and double-click the .exe to install it:

Doug Knox (http://www.dougknox.com/xp/scripts_desc/fix_xp_logon.htm)

It will overwrite the dodgy version of the msgina.dll file with a working version and the logoff start menu item will re-appear as if by magic.

DebbieSorry, but I'm not going to replace a genuine Windows system dll with some who knows what dll.

Well lets see now, when I installed Windows, the logoff option worked fine.

After installing some of my apps I discovered that the logoff option no longer worked.

After I put the new dll in, the logoff option worked fine again.

I'll leave it to you good people to draw your own conclusions as to which dll was the dodgy one. :)

I personally wouldn't either...and I'm sure Arjay would agree. Even though the DLL is working, who knows what other sort of code lies within it. You might have malicious content. Besides that, you ran an EXE. That too could have caused some major problems.

Did you even try my solution in post #3?

Hi PeejAvery,

Yes, I did try your solution, but I couldn't see any option called Display Log Off anywhere.

I do understand where you are coming from, but the person that gave me that link in the other forum told me that he had known Doug Knox and had used his solutions and tips for many years, which is why I decided to use it.

You didn't read what I wrote. That works!
