PHP beginner - I need help!

I am wanting to learn PHP for a website I am currently making, and I have installed PHP5 and Apache 2, but I can't run a PHP file.
I am working on it locally, and I know my domain name is jamespc.home, and when I type that into a browser, it comes up with an Apache test page saying apache has been installed succesfully.
However, I do not know how to run PHP files from this. I have written out a test PHP file, but do I need to use an FTP to upload it to jamespc.home to see the output?

Sorry if this is unclear, and sorry for the noobish question, but any help is appriciated!
