Well, MS did it again!

I am trying to backup all my stuff that I did in 2007, in fact, I have to.
Now, I'm quite organised and have been using my own directory structure for years.

Say for example, I have a structure like this :
C:\Hannes\Projects\Articles\Published\Customising your Desktop using Visual Basic.NET 2005\Desktop_Wiz\Desktop_Wiz\bin\Debug

It makes sense to me, because I know exactly where to find my stuff.
Now, if you want to add frustration to your life, try to burn this folder to a cd!!

Vista saves the files to be written to the cd in this location :
C:\Users\HanneSThEGreaT\AppData\Local\Microsoft\Windows\Burn\Burn\Windows Burn Folder
Which is completely absurd!!!!

Because of this, I can not burn my cd, meaning I cannot backup my stuff!

I mean really, is it really necessary to have such a long directory tree just to save your files to be written to disk ¿
They ( MS ) might find all this frustration amuzing, I certainly don't!

I know some of you will say I need to shorten my file names and / or directory structures, then, I will have to disagree, because it doesn't make any sense why I should do that.

After hours of frustration ( messing up my New Year spirit ), I went to the "ever so helpful Vista help". There they claimed that I can change my "Burn Location" if I just right click on my CD drive, select the Recording tab, and choose a new location, then everything should be hunky dory. Well, sorry to burst the bubble here, but it wasn't, and it wasted even more time because the folders are so large, and it takes ages to copy, even on a very very fast machine such as mine.

I brought all my empty cds with me today, to use XP to write my stuff, and I'm basically 100% certain I won't have any issues with it.

So, is there any Nero version that is supported on Vista, or should I rather change back to XP ¿

There's always been a 255 character filename limit, even with API's.
Networks can't have them.

I have

\Visual Basic Samples\a\API...

but that even gets long...

David, I know that!

The whole issue I have is with MS storing the temp files in :
C:\Users\HanneSThEGreaT\AppData\Local\Microsoft\Windows\Burn\Burn\Windows Burn Folder

Which is ridiculous, to say the least! :thumbd:
If it wasn't for that, I would have been able to write my stuff!! :thumbd:

I managed to backup all my stuff using XP and Nero.

Vista has the built in Backup Program, but I don't think that would help with your issue.

I didn't burn anything on my pc, though. My buddy backed up to a network though, and it all works (although he isn't sure where it saved it)

Well, since the Microsoft got rid of SFN 8.3 format with Windows 95. 255 characters is the limit in 95 to XP. However, in Vista the character limit is 259. Way to go Microsoft! In 12 years they added 4 characters. This same limit applies to a whole folder path. Isn't that just stupid!

Personally, I have never burned a folder with that long of a file path before. I don't see why it doesn't work. Have you ever burned anything this deep in XP before? You would think that Vista would be a step back.

EDIT: You could try one of the following freewares. I love FileHippo!

DeepBurner (http://filehippo.com/download_deepburner/) (I recommend)
CDBurnerXP (http://filehippo.com/download_cdburnerxp/) (Vista too!)

Thanx Paul for those tools, It seems as if they'll do the trick next time I decide to backup my stuff on Vista - that is to say, if I still have Vista by that time, and not XP or even Windows 3.1 :p
