zeroing a running total

hello all -

quick question: is there a way to have a running total actually show 0.00? my rt is set as such, if x exists then show sum of y (dollar amount). well if x does not exist, i just get a blank field. i would like it to show 0.00. now i know i can just set up a formula field that says if isnull(rt) then 0.00, but i was just wondering if there was another way.

any thoughts?
