What exactly is a widget. I know that its add-on software that is usually written for a specific host intended, but are there any rules? I have never made one before(if you can't tell) and want to. I heard about Ruby on Rails and thought I could use that, but I don't know if it'll work for a widget. I basically want a snapshot of a page on the users website, when the user clicks on one of the items in the snapshot it pulls up and main page that shows everythign about that item.

Pick your definition. Typically, I use the term to refer to a GUI object (button, list, edit box, etc.) that is not a complete window.

I choose this one:
Web widget, a third party item that can be embedded in a web page
now what language is good to write widgets in? Any documentation that maybe talks about how this is done?

From Tomsoft@webwag team :
"A widget is generally speaking a small application, a little bit of code, that does one simple thing but does it well. It’s fairly easy to develop a new widget!"
By the way, Webwag's team has made nice tutorials on widget development, both on web and mobile phones. You can find them at http://developer.webwag.com
