What are some other websites like it? Not that I don't like them, it's just that I'm not seeing any projects I want to contribute to.

And since CodePlex is a Microsoft site, there are some postings by the actually Developers, and they often are around to ask questions and get (Microsoft Specific) answers directly "from the horses mouth"

Ask your boss.
If he accepts you to visit sourceforge.net, he will accept fresmeat.net, most probably.
