The top 10 things I took away from Tech Ed that weren't as exciting as they should have been. To be honest, some of these are "whoa!" and some are D'oh. :
10 – "Dynamic IT" is the current "sound cool using the Microsoft word/term of the day". This follows other legendary Microsoft products like Bob, Clippy, DNA, Hailstorm, and WinFX.
9 – If you hadn't heard of SQL Server "Katmai", don't worry! Microsoft gave it is innovative new name… Microsoft SQL Server 2008. Look for it in early (?) 2008.
8 – SharePoint, not just a breakfast cereal
7 – If you step on a cockroach at Margaretaville it is likely to carry you away. They are that big…. (One of the Microsoft "side-parties" was at Margaretaville. The cockroaches seemed to have gotten past the bouncers even though they didn’t' have an invitation).
6 – When using a third-party library to make a phone connection, you should always make sure you know what country the system is using! (We wrote a program using the web21CSDK that makes a phone call between two phone numbers. We didn't realize that the service was from the UK until after we answered the calls…
5 – IIS will be included with Windows Server 2008 Core…. But will it include the current .NET framework….? Rumor is, it won't.
4 – If you are into building your own development tool, then you'll want to check out Microsoft Visual Studio "Shell Edition". This is your chance to build onto or extend Visual studio. "Shell can be used as an integrated or isolated tool.
3 – VMWare Virtual Machines can be converted to Microsoft's format for Virtual Machines using the Windows Server 2008 Virtual Machine Manager. (This doesn't seem like good news for VMWare!)
2 – Visual Studio "Orcas" was renamed Visual Studio 2008
1 – XAML can make your programming harder if you let it.
This started out as an article, but I decided to simply make it a post. If you went to Tech Ed, post your top 10 (or top 3) :)
