Cannot use external usb drive

Hi everyone. I am trying to use my external usb drive (300GB WD, ATA, using an external USB encosure), without success: in particular, the driver is not even displayed in the computer management->disk management of the administration tools in XP.
any ideas?

(PS: the usb drive is displayed in the "safely remove hardware" as: WDC WD3000 ....... USB Device)

Have you tried using Western Digital's Data Lifeguard Tools (http://support.wdc.com/download/index.asp?cxml=n&pid=999&swid=1)? I believe there are utilities for first time use of their drives.
