Hello, I hope this is the right place for this! I'm looking for a little help here, so any and all comments would be appreciated.
I'm a full time student, but messing around with computers has always been a big hobby of mine. As it is these days, I do a lot of web development related work, Web Design, XML languages, heavy Javascript and PHP work. But I've been wanting to get into doing GUI programs for a while, but I don't know where to start! From what I've read, apparently most any language can be used to create windows programs, but all are not created equal. I got an old book from a friend, Petzold's Programming Windows which I very much enjoyed, but using the Win32 API doesn't seem to be the way most people program today, and I found online help lacking. I've also tried around with Java + Swing, but eh.
So for a new comer (willing to pick up whichever language neccessary) what would be the best way to learn to create native windows programs? Do .Net programs all require that .Net is installed? How do a lot of your standard, .exe programs, get programmed? I've been fumbling around for the better part of a year now (in my spare time) but I can't seem to find the right way to go.
