I'm a new member to codeguru and i just wanted know about which languages/tools are used to create application programms for chatting like yahoo or msn messenger.

Your post topic is not related to your question and this board is not the right place for this question either. So, there are less chances that you get a satisfactory response. It will be better if you post the question in the relavent boards.
Anyway, you can use any visual language, that depends upon what sort of functionality you want to provide. You can use VC++, C#, VB , C Builder, Delphi etc. So, depending upon your skill with a suitable language, you'll be able to do that.
