Hello,

I am currently studying an MSc in 'Software Technology for the Web'. I am trying to decide on a relevant and worthwhile dissertation idea for my course. I was wondering if I might be able to ask anyone here some advice on this. I'd like it to be web development based and tackle an area that needs further research. Ideally I'd like to go into more depth of one or more server side scripting languages, such as PHP, Perl, ASP or JSP, possibly in combination with a complex database. Additionally I would very much like to use XML and XSL. These areas were covered on my course and I would like to become more proficent in at least a few of them for my future career as a web developer. From this broad outline, does any particular project based research come to mind that might be benifical to the web development industry? Any ideas would be greatly appreciated!

Cheers,
Paul

You have mentioned convention technologies. For dissertation, it could be better to study and introduce something special. Like VisualWave (if it is still alive) or Cache Server Pages (cache is post-relational database, so it meets you second criteria too).

...I am trying to decide on a relevant and worthwhile dissertation idea for my course...Haha. Not to rain on your parade but I started out the same way. Something "relevant and worthwhile" by the end of it I just wanted it over!!

Funny...you think I might have a case of misguided idealism! I'm almost positive whatever I decide to do, no matter how interesting, I will hate it after 3 months! Thanks for the suggestion boudino, I looked into Cache Server Pages, I can see why it probably would be good to use them, thing is my skills in ..PHP, Perl, ASP, JSP.. are at best intermediate, and really want to step it up a notch and become really good, before I start applying for web jobs early next year. Thats mainly why I want to include at least one of them in my dissertaion. Someone on another forum suggested a cms framework with multiplatform formating such as PDA, WAP, browser etc.. I like the idea, thing is other companies have already done this. Maybe I need a twist to the cms, something that would be useful but not really attempted yet. Or may some kind of complex framework that isn't cms. Any ideas?
