Capture card compatibility question

Hi, can somebody explain to me if there are some capture cards that cannot be used with direct show? I found these 2 capture cards:

1) V-Stream DV/AV Expert TV stereo TV883 DVR
2) Pinnacle studio AV/DV version 9

Are both of these compatible with direct show capture filters? I can't decide which to get. Which is better?
