Looking for a different database(free)

I have used codebase in the past (I know it is not free) I use Microsoft Access right now but i was wanting to explore other databases that are free. Any good ideas? Also that have good documentation.

MySQL is great.

MySQL also has good doco, and there are good GUI administration tools for it.

Firebird (http://firebird.sourceforge.net/) is is a free, open source, cross platform database.
But I don't know a good UI for managing it.
