I've realized that in the near future I'll have to work with the registry of WinXP (VB apps and services.) Now, since I've never done this and like the way that my computer operates at the present moment, I was wondering if I could back up the current settings that are in the registry so that if I mess something up I won't be completely screwed? In case something does go wrong, I would like the option of simply resetting the registry to what it was before.

- [Start] -> [Run]
- Type: ntbackup
- Press [Ok]

Choose to do a custom backup, where you pick your own files. You can select whatever files you want, just make sure that "System State" is checked. SYSTEM STATE will backup your registry files and system files (unless you tell it otherwise).

*In NTBackup, you can also use the "Automated System Recovery Wizard" which would also allow you to create a start-up disk in case you really hack up the registry.

*You can also take a look at Windows XP "System Restore" feature, but a manual backup ensures you have what you need.
