Is it worthy to code my work in .NET?

Hi all. I'm interested in algorithms and Artificial Intelligence prolems (Neural Net, Genetic Algorithms,...). I heard that .NET is so great, but I wonder if it's worthy to code my works, which need speed, in .NET (and if yes, which languages I should I use).
