Registering safe controls

I was reading that when adding a web part to SharePoint that you will need to find the Public Key token property and manually put it in the web config file. I imagine that if you were doing this this key would be applicable to only one unique server and that you would have to do it on every server that you had.

Is there no good automated way to do this?
