Draw Modes and what they are used for?

I’m trying to get a handle on CDC::SetROP(int nDrawMode) method. The simple nDrawModes I understand, but others like R2_MERGENOTPEN is confusing. Are there any tutorials that explains these draw modes and under what circumstances would you use one over another? Micro$oft’s docs do not indicate what these modes are used for.
