Looking for volunteer work using Java

I'm new to the Java programming language, and have a decent grasp on programming concepts in general, in addition to knowing a little of a handful of languages (VB, C++, PHP, ASP, HTML). As part of my adventure in learning Java I want to write some small programs using the language and various features of the language (I/O, GUI, possibly serialization or threading). All I would ask for in return is a great reference, though an honest reference indicative of my strengths and weaknesses for said project would be equally appreciated. Thanks!
