I understand that once you install ver 9 you can't go back to 8.1b I don't know if this includes the sdk?
I have a desk top computer with 8.1b and books on 8.1b
I have a lap top with XP and dx 9
can I install 8.1b sdk on the lap top with out messing the funcionality of the lap top's dx 9

Yeah thats right, you can't uninstall directX, mind there are a few rogue programs out there that claim it. The thing is you never need to unistall the runtimes because they are backwards compatible.
As for the SDKs they are easily installed and uninstalled. Yea it will be fine if you install the Dx8.1 SDK, if there are any problems just reinstall Dx9 and it will be fixed ;).

Also if you do get the Dx9 SDK make sure you get the Dx9b Summer 2003 update. Lots of stuff was fixed and I know someone who had quite a bit of bother becuase he didn't realise he didn't have the Summer update on the PC he was working on :D.
