Wrappers and Hooking: good resource

Hey All,
I see this term "wrapper" and "hooking" referred in many places and I find their use in many a tutorial, Im wondering what a good resource to understand what a wrapper is,how to make one, and what are the advantages of using one etc... can be found.

Any resources that can help beginners with the idea behind the techniques mentioned that you have come across or you;ve used for yourself?

Any help will be appreciated.
