Trouble installing .Net

I get the setup screen and it says "Setup has detected that some of the Windows componants that are installed on your computer do not match the version required..."

I went through Window Update online and installed everything. The OS is up to date with all drivers and patches

1. Is language version of your OS and VS compatible.
2. May be that your OS has newer version of some components, and VS is older one so compatibility problem arises.

Yes, it is a new laptop & the OS is up-to-date. My copy of .Net is two years old. How do I get around this?

Only thing that comes into my mind is to update VS.NET, but I guess this is not the kind of advice you expect. Maybe you should check MSDN for good advice what to do in such case. Nothing more comes to my mind, sorry.
