Modern Operating Systems, 2nd Edition by Andrew Tanenbaum is a very good book.

It might be easier for you to pick one operating system to start with, and work your way up rather than trying to learn the theory behind operating systems first.

Hi!
A good start would be Operating System by William Stalling. If you know a little about OS and you want a good understanding of their workings then go for Operating System Design The Xinu Approach by Douglas Comer.
hope this helps

You know technically a counter that ticks 1 to 0 every millisecond or depending on the hardware speed counts as an operating system... ;)
