I need to direct a URL address to a new server site. Do I need to contact the provider or can I just do it....any ideas would be appreciated.

Thanks in advance,

You mean you want to create http links to to messages on a news server ?

If so you need to get the news server operator, to setup a http server with an interface to the news server.

No, i think he means that he needs to reconfigure a few DNS entries so that www.his-site.com points to a different ip address:

yes; you must contact the person responsible for DNS records at your new nameservice-provider

1) go here: http://www.internic.net/whois.html

2) type in your current website address

ther response looks like:

Whois Server Version 1.3

Domain names in the .com and .net domains can now be registered
with many different competing registrars. Go to http://www.internic.net
for detailed information.

Domain Name: MICROSOFT.COM
Registrar: NETWORK SOLUTIONS, INC.
Whois Server: whois.networksolutions.com
Referral URL: http://www.networksolutions.com
Name Server: DNS1.CP.MSFT.NET
Name Server: DNS1.TK.MSFT.NET
Name Server: DNS3.UK.MSFT.NET
Name Server: DNS1.DC.MSFT.NET
Name Server: DNS1.SJ.MSFT.NET
Status: REGISTRAR-LOCK
Updated Date: 26-nov-2003
Creation Date: 02-may-1991
Expiration Date: 03-may-2012

in this case, you would contact the directory maintainer of MSFT.NET as it is his dns server that is associating microsoft.com with an ip address
