In general you can't learn very much. You can't even ask if a given email address exsists, without sending an email to that address.

You can of course check if the server part of the email address (the part after the @) refers to a server that acctually exists.

But other than that your best hope of finding information about an email address, is probably to do a google search on it.

addition to what khp said...
you can use hotmail - which lets you see a lot of info regarding the email that sends you a mail..
not very usefull though...

No need to use hotmail for that. Just select 'View message souce' in whatever mail client you are using, and you will get a ton of details about how the mail was routed from the sender to you.

The only problem with this, is that with spam mail, much of this info may be faked.

Tracking down an email sender is in most cases hopeless. This because of various reasons: firstly, the information in the mail header is easily to be spoofed. Secondly, even if it is not faked, it contains as much as an email address. No decent ISP or email provider on this planet will give out the personal data of a user just because you ask for it. You need to prove in court that the sender has commited a crime with that email(s), and the court must order the ISP or email provider to give out the info. I don't have to say how hard this is, how much it costs and so on.

And then again, a court can only touch someone falling under its jurisdiction. That is, an US court will have trouble ordering something to an ISP located in China, and the other way around.

And finaly, aven if you knew and could prove who the email sender is, you had a very hard time to legally or otherwise touch that person in any way.

I do not know whether you have a particular problem or you're just asking out of academical curiosity, but the answer is "forget it". The best you can do is to change your email address, if you get spammed or otherwise harrased.
