Up until a couple years ago, I still used my 286 :D. Then I upgraded to a 386! I'm a little bit better off now though.

As ususal, you americans have to brag with what you have. "I have 32 bits, yeah!"

Just kidding. :D

Well the thing about my 386 was that it was a laptop, so I could just keep it in the keyboard tray and thus my desk was clear (well, that is to say there was no computer on it... it wasn't necessarily clean ;)).

The one before that, however, was a huge honking pile of ... computer hardware.

Hum, well, I have to keep my system hard disk outside of the case, next to a 50 cm ventilator when temperatures here in Spain hit 40 degrees in the summer. And that's on my current computer ;)

Well, to remain on-topic, here is my current computer:
Dual AMD Athlon 2000+
Asus A7M266D motherboard
1 GB RAM
2 x 120 GB harddisk in RAID 0
40 GB system hard disk
Gefore 4400
Audigy 2
21 inch LCD screen

October 12th, 2003, 05:32 PM
AMD 1.0gig
500meg PC100
Asus a7v
2 6.4 gig HDDs
1 80 gig HDD
Plenty of extra holes in the case for ventilation. Some larger ones
in the back are filled with duct tape. ( semi ATX case with real
ATX MotherBoard ). Floppy is on the bottom of the case where it
fell to last time I was fixing ( kicking ) the putor. Its hole is another
ventilation slot :D

And the lower end tester
Intel 400 mhz
64 meg
1 8.2 gig HDD

Actually, does anybody else use dual PCs a lot ? Ever since I got my first one (a dual Celeron 500), I can't live without it anymore.

Ok, I'll one down you. I got my first computer in 1988 it had:

Intel 80286 @16 MHz (with math coprocessor)
1 MB RAM (It could only use 640KB of this)
20 MB HDD
5.25" FDD
64 kB EGA Adapter

Before that I used my Sister's Kaypro CPM computer.

So there.

I've always been a little leary of them, since most companies (in my experience) don't test their code on a dual processor....maybe it's just another sign that I'm wacky :)

I've never seen current software break on a dual system vs a single CPU system. The only issue has been drivers.

The big benefit you get from a dual processor system is when you are running two high-load programs at the same time. E.g.
- compiling a C++ program
- working in VMWare
- Trying out our program
- working in VB
- working in an image processing program
- playing a game

So while I'm compiling a longish project (may take 10 minutes), I have time to play some Warcraft 3 and neither of them is slowed down.

AFAIK none of the compilers is multithreaded, but some make programs are. For example, recompiling the Linux kernel on a dual machine is roughly twice as fast as on a single processor machine. I'm not sure whether MS's nmake can also take advantage of dual CPUs, but my guess is yes.

[Edit: Hum, I didn't find anything related to multiple compiler invocations in the nmake reference, so maybe it's not possible :/ ]
