Hi
Is it possible to network two pcs using cat-5 cable (the one that goes into RJ-45 connectors) without using a router. I know that the same can be done using co-axial cable and it does not require a router but the network card must support co-axial connectors. My network card has only RJ-45 connectors. Can I establish a network at home between my pc and my brother's using the cat5 cable or do I need to buy a router or hub as well. Thanks for your replies.

you don't need a router, hub or switch if you only want to connect 2 pc's, but you can't use a standard cat cable.

you need to use (buy) a cross cat cable (end to end connection).

As Deddi has told you, when you connect a PC to a hub or router, you use a flat cable.

However when you want to tie then together, a crossed cable is required.

The only problem is that this is not an scalable solution, because when you have three PCs, you cannot use this technique and must use a hub or more that a network card.

I would recommend you to buy a hub... it is not too expensive.
