Hi*!
I am thinking of doing an Open-Source Win32 IM client supporting multiple protocols. If anyone is interested in taking part, do contact me at my email address.

Many others have tried this type of thing, including Microsoft. Earlier versions of Microsoft's MSN Messenger supported other IM software, but it was not open-source of course. The problem is that most IM software uses proprietary protocols. Therefore before starting such a project, you need to determine what protocols are documented and/or have existing software that can be used. For ICQ, the Miranda Instant Messenger (http://www.miranda-im.org) probably can be used.

Trillian (cerulean studios) is just that, It supports AIM, MSN, ICQ, Yahoo, and IRC all in one.

Is Trillian open-source or public domain? If so, then a link would help; or at least, a web site address. Certainly we could search for it, but if someone has that information, then it is likely to save time for many people if more specific information is provided.

Trillian is a retail program available at http://www.ceruleanstudios.com/ as either a basic version (free) or pro version ($25 up front and possibly a yearly charge for updates and tech support). As far as I can tell it's written in XML and has some form of license for the AIM, MSN, Yahoo, and ICQ dll's. It's interface is a nice change from AIM, that's really the only reason I use it but I've read that is has lots of special features available. BTW you should look into "jabber", it's used for all kinds of custom made IM clients and has a large network of resources for developers including code libraries and newletters.

I am thinking of doing an Open-Source Win32 IM clientTrillian is a retail programThen Trillian is not relevant. It has no value to the project usman999_1 asked about, except possibly as an example of a potential design.

Trillian would be an excellent example to look at. It is becoming very popular.

Is Trillian open-source? That answer is still not clear. Unless it is open-source, then it is only it's features that can be looked at.

I should let Usman decide how useful the suggestion is, but it sure is not what Usman was asking. The question, as stated, is who wants to help.

Sorry, I wasn't clear. Tillian should be looked at for *features*. It is popular and offers a number of features that would be expected.

And I am sorry if I was too emphatic, but I was quick to react because I have seen many other posts and messages in which someone asks for freeware or open source or something like that, and then someone sneaks in a commercial product without saying it is a commercial product. It is the combination of providing an answer that was not requested and omitting an important peice of information that is likely to get a reaction from me. If it had simply been stated initially that Trillian is a commercial product then I would have thought privately that that is not what Usman asked for but I would have quickly moved on to other things.

Well thanks to all for your feedback. I actually asked for help quite a few months back, more then year to be precise. And then nobody came forward so i started myself just to implement MSN .NET Messenger Service. At the moment its *almost* complete. If someone would like to try out my client, please click the link in my signature. And since it's my own effort so i didnt make it open-source. This binary is for Win2k & above, if someone needs Win95/98 version let me know. Btw this client is not using MFC, its plain Win32.

Usman.
P:S. After download and unzipping the package, please excecute the "Install.exe" once to do the setup & stuff, then you can start the URMessenger.exe.

That is interesting, Usman. I have downloaded URMessenger but I have not yet installed it.

Feel free to contact me; I prefer EMail and you can go to my profile to send me a message (email message, not private message preferably).

Thank you for telling me about that. It should not be like that, and I have checked my profile; I don't see why it is doing that.

So use email address samuel@socal.rr.com.

There is already a open source cross platform application to do this.
