What is the escape velocity of Io in furlongs per fortnight?

Click to See Complete Forum and Search --> : Does anyone know the answer to this common fact? SolarFlare November 10th, 2002, 10:07 PM What is the escape velocity of Io in furlongs per fortnight? galathaea November 11th, 2002, 12:22 AM Since, vesc = sqrt(2 * G * Mio / Rio), we just plug in... G = 6.673 * 10 ^ -11 N m^2 / kg^2 Rio = 1.815 * 10 ^ 6 m Mio = 8.94 * 10 ^ 22 gives... vesc = 2.564 m/s Now converting, we know 1 furlong = 660 ft * 1 m / 3.28 ft = 201.22 m 1 fortnight = 14 day * 24 hr/day * 60 min/hr * 60 s/min = 1209600 s or 1 fu/fo = 1.66 * 10 ^ -4 m/s so finally.... (trumpets) vesc = 1.54 * 10 ^ 7 furlongs per fortnight. Of course, the real question concerns the psychology of someone who would answer this... Platinum Plus November 11th, 2002, 01:41 AM Accuracy my dear friend galathaea. The more you round off those figures to 3dp the less accurate it gets. Stick to the full figures and then round off the answer then watch how those figures change ;) galathaea November 11th, 2002, 03:22 AM **** the ****, ****, ****ing ****! Doctor Luz November 11th, 2002, 03:44 AM  Doctor Luz November 11th, 2002, 03:49 AM Are you going to take your hollidays at Io, solarflare? Xeon November 11th, 2002, 09:11 AM From Galathaea: Since, vesc = sqrt(2 * G * Mio / Rio), we just plug in... G = 6.673 * 10 ^ -11 N m^2 / kg^2 Rio = 1.815 * 10 ^ 6 m Mio = 8.94 * 10 ^ 22 gives... vesc = 2.564 m/s 100% rocket science. Let's face it.:eek::eek::eek::eek::eek::eek: SolarFlare November 11th, 2002, 09:18 AM Originally posted by Doctor Luz Are you going to take your hollidays at Io, solarflare? Of course! Why else would I be asking such a question! I need to figure out the cost of my excursion. Galathea can come along for free. Doctor Luz November 11th, 2002, 10:27 AM Interesting place for Hollidays, some cold... but... And what kind of vehicle are you going to take? Rocket propulsion.. ? this could be a problem because are you sure there are any gas station at Io?. :p :p :p SolarFlare November 11th, 2002, 03:34 PM Originally posted by Doctor Luz Interesting place for Hollidays, some cold... but... I'm trying to get off of it. galathaea November 11th, 2002, 08:33 PM You probably want to check out one of these (http://www.rexresearch.com/antigrav/antigrav.htm). That should get you started. PS: I already had my bags packed, and then I noticed you LIED! Liar! SolarFlare November 11th, 2002, 09:37 PM Originally posted by galathaea You probably want to check out one of these (http://www.rexresearch.com/antigrav/antigrav.htm). That should get you started. Ummm... actually... most of those are my patents :D. Originally posted by galathaea PS: I already had my bags packed, and then I noticed you LIED! Liar! Oh, right... o geez, how to cover for that one... okay here's what happened - you see, when I asked that question I was planning to go to Io - right - but then, as I was preparing, I was suddenly warped through space-time onto Io 2 days in the future. So, you see, there's still one of me on Earth trying to get to Io, while I don't know how I actually ended up on Io, but I need to get off. ;) SolarFlare November 11th, 2002, 09:39 PM Originally posted by solarflare I was suddenly warped through space-time onto Io 2 days in the future. So, you see, there's still one of me on Earth trying to get to Io Wait, so I have a clone on Io that I didn't know about? COOL!!! Galathaea, you can still come with me cuz I'm still going to Io to meet my clone. Unless he tricks out on me and leaves before I get there! He would do it, too. I know guys like that. Amn November 13th, 2002, 01:58 PM I think the figure resembling the US patent #5,211,006 is wrong - there should be NČ instead of OČ definitely. I just fed the numbers to my Antigrav-Sim-4000 desktop number crunching mainframe, and it keeps spitting out erroneous reports. I have to conclude the OČ definitely should not be there. Please forward the message to the constructor/designer, he might have been working in the wrong direction since 1994  Best regards :D SolarFlare November 13th, 2002, 03:04 PM Originally posted by Amn I think the figure resembling the US patent #5,211,006 is wrong - there should be NČ instead of OČ definitely. And that was nearly 9 years ago... so that means without a doubt that by next year everyone on the planet will be sporting one of his fancy Magnetohydrodynamic Propulsion Systems. Would be nice if everyone on the planet would even start sporting any system at all :D SolarFlare November 13th, 2002, 03:19 PM Originally posted by Amn Would be nice if everyone on the planet would even start sporting any system at all :D I don't know what you mean exactly by that, but I can tell that it was cynical. ;) codeguru.com
