Amn October 20th, 2002, 01:43 PM As usual after having written a 2 page post i discarded it... I guess: 1. Practise oral English actively. Know that even natives who are fluent in English frequently make mistakes, something which gives you a unique opportunity to ignore your own faults and feel optimistic about your learning. This is a perfectly realistic approach - be brave and feel good about speaking it ! 2. Be aware of English spoken media - generally movies, books, and TV programs. In a way it is the fastest learning curve after speaking and writing it yourself. With everything the media has brought with it to other non-English speaking countries over past, the perhaps most positive and profound effect is the introduction and integration of English language. I am not what you d call a fan of world integration & globalisation but having at least one dominant language (in some areas of course) is of great help to us all. 3. Make learning a habit. Keep in mind that even people who had a chance to be given extensive amount of good English at childhood and youth by their parents, may no longer speak it natively now,if their families had stopped practising it actively, because of, for example, physical relocation or religious and tradional beliefs. That is why it is important that one is more or less constant in his learning IMHO. We wish you best of luck ! :D :D :D P.S. Expecting a post the size of this one from you in months to come.... Vocaburlary comes second, and it's natural to know lots of vocaburlary after you've a good foundation of English. The more important thing for a beginner is the usage and structure of English. U might know tons of words from the English vocaburlary, but if you duno how to use it properly, u might make a fool outta ye'self. :) Actually, learning English is quite simple compared to other languages. One of the world's toughest language is the Traditional Chinese language, the kind they're using in East Asian countries. There's over 4000 characters to understand and write, and it's too impossible. And worse still, these 4000++ characters can have any combination with any combination, any form with any combination, any combination with many forms, or many forms with several combinations, and last but not least, many forms with infinite combinations with many forms embeded in each form + combination........uugggh. It's a total mess. Simplified Chinese is already tough enough, that's why. :) Platinum Plus October 21st, 2002, 02:32 AM There's over 4000 characters to understand and write, and it's too impossible. Before I had my first day of school I could speak proper english. This was due to the fact that it was used daily around me. I think going to school actually diminished my skills. Gabriel Fleseriu October 22nd, 2002, 02:44 AM Of course that speaking a clean English is not rubbish. It is rubbish to think that you cannot communicate in English if you don't respect the correct word order. It is important to understand and be understood. A few further thoughts: - short sentencies are better than long ones - do not use abbreviations, like "Can u tell me...". Additional,I sometimes understand some words different from you--lead to my wrong thinking:o :o ,how to solve it? I guess if you want to think in English to better understand it, here's what I suggest: Learn why certain expressions or words in English are the way they are. Get to understand the grammar in English well so you don't have to rearrange words all the time when you think. Read about a paragraph of English at first and try to think in English while you read it. If you are thinking about other things while you read, think about them in English, it is more confusing if you're reading in one language and reading or talking in another. When you learn new English words, relate them or define them with other English words. This encourages English connections and thinking within the language. I am learning to speak French and I can think in French if I try to, basically following these guidelines. scarab_cn October 30th, 2002, 11:38 PM Thank you, solarflare pal,for your practical suggestion:) :) I just do it NOW!  Xeon October 31st, 2002, 12:05 AM From Scarab: When did the game begin?I don't know... Makes it look like people shrink a lot late in life! Xeon November 26th, 2002, 09:51 PM From Simon666: While speaking of height : the Dutch are the tallest in Europe (and across the world) I think. That is our neighbour just north of Belgium. Belgians are a little above the average height in Europe. I'm not exceptionally tall at 1m87, and at 1m75 solarflare is near the median. More info about it for white males is over here. They apparently don't have charts specific for Asians, but according to this chart there are even around 20% of men under Xeon's height. The Dutch??!! I thought it was the Americans??!!! And yes. In my school, there's several folks who're even shorter than me, but that's pretty rare. I'm among the shortest in my school.......darn! And since I'm both thin and short, I look real small and such.(Xeon == Australian female singer Kylie Minogue but Male version???!!!) From Dimm_Coder: Interesting graphic I did not suppose it. Is it means that I with my 1m92 belong to a group of people who are taller than something near 99% of other peoples Hmmm......at 1.92 is indeed very gigantic. Please spare me and don't break my arms, Dimm! Now, that's not the way of the real man, k???!! Simon, where from U know such information. Are U interested in all what doing in every part of Europe? Simon seems to know everything about online information. He's always giving us links to web pages and such, from A to Z. Is he........the eBeast???!!!!:eek::eek::eek: scarab_cn November 26th, 2002, 11:46 PM Originally posted by Simon666 They apparently don't have charts specific for Asians, but according to this chart (http://www.halls.md/on/men-height-o.htm) there are even around 20% of men under Xeon's height. how tall is Xeon? scarab_cn November 26th, 2002, 11:51 PM Originally posted by sbrothy Since English is only my second language I use Merriam-Webster alot: http://www.m-w.com/home.htm If I cannot remember exactly how a word is spelled it will suggest corrections and lead me to the right word. It seems you can even hear it pronounced although I have never tried that. Getting the language right is, in my humble opinion, important if you want help from other people. If you cannot be bothered to at least try to write decent human language (english or not), those you want help from might not be so inclined to offer it. Ofcourse, if people can see you're from China they will probably help you if they can understand you at all ;-) Just my 2 cents... Good luck! Thank you very much! The sign is "interdit de depasser" (no passing). That is also a Belgian roadsign. I think they are similar throughout Europe. Although when I went to Sweden I notice that instead of white in the middle they use yellow. Yellow and black are optimal contrast colors, but it doesn't look as good (maybe it's just because it is unfamiliar to me). Xeon November 28th, 2002, 12:33 AM From Scarab: how tall is Xeon? 1.65 m! From Simon(5 + 1),(5 + 1),(5 + 1): Didn't you have a support role as hobbit in The Two Towers? Who's Hobbit? Elrond's teacher or what? I'm totally a fool in such classics, but I think Hobbit is a short and cute guy who's sweet and very cuddly, at least to gurls. :p Never used Google Xeon? Seldom. But I'm suprised that u can actually remember all those web address and such. Maybe you've an Oracle database in your brain???!!! Do you think mine sucks? I'm getting a bit tired of it.:( Indeed, Solar's new avatar really sucks compared to the old one done by me. Start a poll in Codeguru to gauge which is better, and I'm gonna win 100% - 0%. And yes. Your avatar is no better than Solar's current avatar.(parking sign) It's even worse, I say. If you can gimme a description of what you want, I can create one for you. Simon666 November 28th, 2002, 03:12 AM Originally posted by Xeon But I'm suprised that u can actually remember all those web address and such. Brad! U've 3 options : 1) Ban Simon 2) Delete/Close this thread 3) Warn Simon This guy in tarnishing my reputation and is making me feel anxious and gory. This is definetly not suitable for kids, and the mere idea of this animation shows how seriously sick he is! Please Brad and SuperModerators! Where are you? I beseech you to do at least something to settle this! God! Anything can happen, but not this! This is ultimately slashing my name, my ego, my reputation, my innocence, my virginity, my health and my happiness!
