What is activeX ?

I have heard a lor about active X(only it's name). But I dont know what it is! I dont even know activeX when I see it.

Can any one kindly tell me what activeX is ? And Can I see it in action anywhere.

In a nutshell, they are just a fancy dll. Their file name are normally *.ocx
