WinXP Pro user interface goes dead

With Win XP Pro and a long-running program, the user interface goes dead after about 30 seconds. Progress bars quit progressing, etc. The only way to see if anything is going on is with the Program Manager.

Surely there is a registry setting that will put the behavior with Win XP Pro back like it has been with all previous versions of Windows.

Can someone tell me how?

Right click on desktop, select 'Property', then select Windows classical in the Combo Box.

Changing to "Classic" made no difference...

The windows look different (of course) but the behavior is the same. I guess Windows XP must just be brain-dead is some cases!
