Hi,

When I perform the Scandisk function, it keeps on restarting. May I know what is wrong with my computer.

Thanks!

Let me guess...
You have Win9x/Me?

Your scandisk keeps restarting because other program(s) accessing your HD.

Try to remove all unnecessary background applications/services.

Hi,

My OS is Win98. I have no application running in the background (well at least none that I can see).

Is this a sign that my hard disk is going to crash on me soon? I have quite a number of important documents inside my pc.

Please advice. Thank you in advance.

It doesn't mean that your HD is going to crash.
Check out this article:

The fact that you don't see application does not mean that none is running. Usually, when you get the list of processes (ctrl-alt-suppr) you can delete half of them and window will continue running as required.

I had the same problem with scan disk at one stage, and it was because my disk had problems. It has always happened, and because of some other symptoms, I thinkl the HD has always had problems. And it has still been working for about 3 years before starting to cause real problems. And then, I was still able to get the data from it if I connected it as second HD (not booting on it). :p

Still, if you really have important data, I would suggest you to save them occasionnally on another disk (HD, CD, zip, floppy, ...). You should do it anyway if your data is really important. :D

Do you have a win98 boot disk?? If not u can download one off the internet, just do a search for win98 boot disk. Once you get a boot disk, put it in and restart your system, and make sure your BIOS is set to boot from the floppy first. Then when the boot disk kicks in select option 2...start w/o CD support and let it boot. When it boots in dos mode you can run SCANDISK from the command prompt. Hope this helps.
