I would like to offer a suggestion that might improve forum use. I suggest a “Resolved/Unresolved” indicator on each thread. Here is how I propose it might work: When a programmer posts a question on a forum, it is marked “Unresolved.” When somebody offers a possible solution, it automatically switches from “Unresolved” to “Resolved”. (Perhaps it might be possible for a responder to override this, if the responder is just asking for clarification). The original poster would be able to change the status back to “Unresolved” if the proposed answer doesn’t resolve the problem. Perhaps the forum moderator might also be able to “Resolve” a thread or remove it from the forum if it is going nowhere.
The point of this suggestion is to provide a better filter than just “0 replies” to peruse the threads for questions for which I might have answers. Sometimes when I post a question, somebody pipes in with an irrelevant comment or request for clarification, and that seems to inhibit others from even examining my question (it isn’t “0 Replies” any more).
I think something like this might help both those seeking help and those trying to offer it (and even those of us firmly in both camps!)
