how to change to 256 color mode

I cannot get 256 colors on my computer. I tried to change the settings, but lets me only to
select 2 or 16 colors. Monitor software is correct too. How do I change the colors to 256?
Is there a free softaware i get to change the color settings?

My computer is a 366Mhz, with Windows 98.

May be your video adapter supports only that much. try to reinstall the driver. that could also solve the problem. else get another video adapter and
reinstall driver.
