Hi !! I am doing Masters in Comp Sc. I am to choose a good area to do my project - Databases or Networking. I need to know which area will be more lucrative and promising with steady job openings !!!!! Asking for too much ?

Databases: You can go into pure DB applications development, or DB application maintenance. Good if you are comfortable with the idea of generating new ideas for optimizations, speed, etc.

Networking: Currently a very lucrative stream. If you can master the fundamentals and can administer or maintain a network without problems, and no hair rise if you are to wake up at 3 am to figure out how to get off that hacker who has been hammering your web servers for past 1 hour, then go into networking. You can also go in for Network Security.

The Best Option: Select a Project of implementing something related to Databases over a Network, alongwith secured Data Transmission,etc.etc.
That gives you the BEST OF BOTH WORLDS.

Hi

You can choose both. You should work on projects that are based on databases on network.

If not choose the field that is of most interest to you because you can be expert in that field only in which you are most interested by default.

Don't go for a choice which is of no interest to you but may have bright future.

Do let me know about your decision

Hi !! I think that is a good idea. My decision will be based on the research projects that we have here in the University. My first choice as you mentioned would be a project where I would work on databases and network in conjucntion.

Hi !! Sorry for late response. I have a project in Network security in mind. Not too sure if it suits my aptitude. Next sem. I'll take up fundamentals of Networks to check out my interests and see if some new projects come up.

Well, the question itself is wrong. To be successful in the software industry, you have to ask questions like do I want to work in optical networking, wireless networking, mobile phones....etc. or do I want to work on relational database, ERP etc. Thinking in terms of database or networking as a whole will not take you anywhere...as they are too broad a field.
Let me know if you want any more information.
Thanks,
ajay

Instead of telling me that the question is wrong you could have told me to reframe my question. Also while I did not clearly mention which field in networking was I thinking of , I should have told ...I am more talking of being a network admin. or network security. At this pt. it is difficult for me to be more specific than this. But soon I'll know.....I am taking a course in networks next sem. So , may be I'll get back to forum once I know what I am looking at.

Don't worry about what is fashionable or lucrative right now. It will change in a year or two anyways. Do what gives you the most satisfaction!!

You will also find that what you want to do and what opportunities there are changes as time goes on. I have been developing for 20 years and in that time I have work in many different technologies and have enjoyed most of them. Most of the changes I have gone through have been because what I wanted to expand my skills or just try something new.
