Or is every single freeking language taught in school obsolete?
(This on the news that microsoft will no longer support applets written in Java.)
"...but java is so much more than applets" // so long platform independence
... and so is fortran, cobal, pascal, delphi, smalltalk, and a dozen other languages that you cannot find jobs for easily.
Someone want to tell me the name of a language that I will not spend a year learning for nothing?

Actually, Java is......#@$!~*&*%%%@$@!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Heh heh heh!
K, k......about the language that u'll not spend a year learning for nothing...that is, about the language that'll take you into the future and is really worth learning, try C++ or C# and Visual Basic. These are the languages that MS will place their emphasis on, in the coming millennium, especially C#. But one thing is that I recommend that u learn C++ rather than C#, cos' C++'s future has been proven over the past decades, and no one really know whether .Net is gonna succeed that well,(.Net, if I'm not wrong, is implemented in C# mostly) so C++ should be ye' best bet. PLUS : U can use C++ on Linux and other Operating Systems too, so if one day, MS is been destroyed, u can always use C++ on Linux, Unix, BeOS and even OS/2 Warp and more. U won't regret it, pal. C++ is really portable and fast, and a lot, a lot of programs today including Symantec's Norton Ultilities and even almost of Microsoft's own products are written with C++!!!!!! That's why!!!!!! Java? ##$@%$%#@!~~&(***:O*%%&$#$+||""~ Curse *******!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Good luck! :-D

IMO it is at least as valuable to learn the fundamentals of systems engineering as it is to learn any particular language. Try Knuth's classic book "Data Structures + Algorithms = Programs" for a decent start.

Robert3,
I suggest you to learn regular expression syntax
and a text manipultion language (awk is good choice!).
This is very useful, if you work with a lot of
source code. .NET technology supports regular expression;
awk, perl, tcl, and python also support regex.
Take a look at syntax of C; awk, C++, and Java has
elements of C syntax.
Scripting is also interesting phenomena; I use awk that is
perl's older and simpler brother.
I hope this helps. Jesus loves you!
Bye!
KP.
