Hi,

we are searching a source code managing software ( version control, etc. ) like Visual Source Save. Is it good ? Is there something better/different available? We are a small team of up to 10 programmers using NT4/W2K and VC++ 6.0.
Comments invited.

Thanks
Peter

I have recently used both Visual Sourcesafe and PVCS. IMO, SourceSafe integrates better with Visual Studio but PVCS is slightly more powerful (but more difficult to use).

Looking at 10 users, I'd say SoureceSafe is the one to go for. Little tip - give the SourceSafe archive its own logical disk partition...we found it doesn't share well with other data/apps.

D.

Hello,

I'm using PVCS for half a year now at work and it's really great, but it's quite complex. Next month we're going to use Continuous, a tool which is much more complex. But according to SCM-experts it's much more powerful too. It's especially powerful when used in a multisite development project like we're working.

At home I use SourceSafe, it works good. I've tried RCS for a while, but I found it not as powerful as SourceSafe is. But RCS is freeware, just as CVS.

Kind regards,

Another option is a program called CVS. This is a "free" software program that is available for a variety of platforms, including Windows.

Personally, I think Visual Source Safe is better than CVS. I've used both, and I find that Source Safe is a lot easier to use/maintain, and the documentation is much, much better. The CVS help is downright terrible, in my opinion.
