I have a client who uses a particular OCX quite a lot.

However they have discovered that the OCX does not support an international setting that they require (i.e. it only allows US currency format) and they have to replace it.

I have suggested writing an interface compatible OCX and simply dropping that in, but the client is worried that this might be seen as infringing the intellectual copyright of the original OCXs designer.

What do you think? Is the interface to an activeX control inherently copyright?

Thanks in advance,
Duncan

I dont see how this could be a copyright issue if you are simply making a seperate interface for this control. If somehow you got the control source code and modify it and then try to resell it.. then possibly yes it would be an issue. However, just integrating it into your software, is not a copyright issue.

P.s. im not a lawyer.. dont listen to me

Unfortunately the client wants to replace the OCX with one which I will write but using the same control name, methods and so on so that their programs will work with this new OCX without recompilation.
However, the money isn't worth the risk exposure. I think I'll just give it a miss...
