I was wondering if it's common among software developers to get paid for overtime hours? Or is overtime taken for granted, something that developers are supposed put overtime hours for free.

It is often taken for granted and is so widespread within the industry that about 10% of developers don't actually know what their houses look like in daylight.

As a developer you will be asked to work all the hours possible - become a contractor and get paid well for those hours is my advice.

My employer usually pay me for the extra work, but only when the overtime is previously agreed.
However, I think that developer's productivity is highly effected by fatigue.
There is no sense to stay at work and just look on the monitor.

My opinion is that the results, not the spent hours must be rewarded.

Most states have laws that govern payment for overtime.
That is, most states REQUIRE payment for overtime.

I feel that if software developers are not paid for doing overtime, then their monthly salary should be slightly higher than normal.
