You are lucky actually.
I live in Australia, earning A$ 50k, which is about US$25000 - US$3000. One third of it goes into taxes. I paid A$17000 into tax last year, ie, my tax last year is about US$8000, would you believe it?

Oh, well, easy come easy go.

Hi

Well,i pay taxes more than you!
I pay almost 8000$US taxes but I earn only 2000$ US. also my C.O.L is very
high. a new medium size car (like mazda 323)cost over 25k$ US.
adding more than 2k $US for insurance & post tax.
i also pay 150$ a year for TV broadcasting.

I also serve in the army twice a year for a total
period of 21 days.

now whos life is better...?

oh yeah? I live in British Columbia, Canada.... need I say more? hehehe

we pay 30-40% tax too. And the wage is sometimes less than 1/2 of the Americans living a 1/2 hour drive from my house. But I enjoy programming, so I'm not complaining ;)

But I still live in Canada, anyone hiring in Seattle?

My husband is a developer. He makes $3,270 every two weeks. He bring's home $2,100, which means he pays $1,170 in taxes and such every 2 weeks. Our apartment is over $1100 a month, and child care is over $1200 a month. So even though the dollar amount is so much higher, the cost of living makes up for it. We consider ourselves poor.

Sorry to hear about that, I can relate a little bit.
When I first started programming I was earning 28k a year ($1076 CDN every 2 weeks, about $600 US). After tax (I'll keep it modest at 33%) is $720 (about $400 US every 2weeks). My rent was $700 and my girlfriend was a fulltime student. that left me approx $300-400 a month for food, insurance, car etc... for the 2 of us. I realize everyone all over has their own problems and monetary woes, but like I said, I enjoy what I do and I still don't let it get me down (although I'd gladly cross the border to work in Seattle...)
For what it's worth, I owed a lot of money on unpaid bills. Did I consider myself poor? Not once. I love my career.

My belly is full.
My wife loves me.
My colleagues appreciate the work I do.
I am penniless.
I am happy.
Money comes, money goes. The more you have the more you worry. For the record, I am in the exact position you describe, the numbers (give or take the current exchange rates) and even my wife's current occupation match. The only thing worth pursuing is an interesting life. I've better things to do than to consider my self poor, regardless of the fact that probably I am.

There's my one cent's worth. All I can afford...

You were lucky... when I was growing up, we had to work 30 hours a day, 10 days a week, with no food or water. And when we would get home, our Dad would kill us and dance about on our graves, singin' Halleliuja.

And if you tell the young people of today that, they won't believe you...
Isn't there a discussion board somewhere for the fans of that show?

What shall you do?: You should, or you have to pay taxes?
Are you a sucker?: Fiscal policy exists despite of your being or not being a sucker.
