You picked a tough one. The average salary differs from place to place quite dramatically. Back east in Ottawa Canada (one of the high tech hot beds in Canada) you would be looking at between $50 000 and $60 000. Keep in mind that is Canadian dollars and the range will depend on what you were making in a previous job and perhaps how well you did in school. School marks play less and less importance as time goes on and fade to no effect by the time you have three to four years of experience.

Now in my new location, Redmond WA I have no idea what one year of experience will get you. I had a hard enough time figuring out what eight years was worth.

When you have no experience it does make it easier if you have a CS degree. If you already have experience and a good reference then the type of degree does not matter - most of the time.

Some companies (but not all) make higher offers to A+ students and lower offers to B students. That is what I meant by marks making a difference.

There will always be some companies that will only make offers to CS graduates with A+ averages. While others are more flexible and are more concerned with team fit and desire to learn. I do not actually have a CS degree - mine is in Mechanical Engineering. So my first job was with a manager that was more interested in team fit and eagerness to learn. Now that I have been at this for a while (eight years) my schooling does not matter any more.

Anyone know what someone with 7 years C++/MFC/OOD could expect to earn in the Edinburgh
area of Scotland, UK?

Not for me, ahem, for a "friend".

Where abouts in Scotland? Glasgow seems to be the current up and comming city in Scotland now. So if Glasgow was your destination then you have an increased salary over Edinburgh... Not quite sure, but in London you could well ask 4 40K and they won't bat an eyelid... so take off about 10K when going up north, especially scotland!

If it helped, rate me.
If it didn't, tell me!
