I thought I would offer my experience dealing with the age issue. I am 24, have worked professionally with C++ for about 3 years and Java for 1 year. Recently I interviewed with a midsized, pretty well established company. One of the people who interviewed me was a thirty-something engineer. Instead of asking me about my skillset and finding out what fundamentals I know/don't know, he asked me tough C++ tricks that basically don't make sense. These are not questions on OO fundamentals, but more like C++ trivia quiz. It was obvious to me that he wanted to fail me. I was able to find out later that he other people who interviewed me felt comfortable with me except this one guy. I know for sure that I qualify for the job, but I felt that this guy didn't want me in because I was a threat to him, probably because he thought I am young and have more energy and has the potential surpass him in performance.
